Medical Device Finishing Services

Precise, documented, repeatable finishes provided to exacting standards.

Medical Device Polishing

Many life changing breakthroughs in the medical device manufacturing field are made possible through technological innovations. As orthopedic devices, cardiovascular implants, and surgical instruments evolve, surface polishing techniques must also continue to improve to support the medical device manufacturing industry.  These groundbreaking advances are only made possible by using the newest materials along with continuously improved machining techniques and surface refinement processes.

Benefits of Medical Device and Equipment Metal Polishing

  • Improve Part Durability and Strength
  • Improved Corrosion Resistance
  • Reduce Manufacturing Cycle Times
  • Maximize Product Yield
  • Provide Consistent Surface Polishing
  • Uniform Cleaning and Sterility
  • Compressive Stress Gains

When the application requires higher strength, resistance to repeated heat cycles and corrosion resistance, today’s stainless and titanium alloys deliver. Although more expensive and difficult to machine, these materials provide the durability to meet the high-test requirements of the medical industry.

WORK WITH THE EXPERTS IN

Precision Metal Finishing Deburring Passivation Services Polishing Exacting Standards

Custom Development Strategy

There is no magic here—it’s precision. We customize each finishing process to fit our clients’ needs from start to finish. At the end of the day, we specialize in you. Our centrifugal barrel services are ideal for parts from 3mm³ to up to 9” x 9” x 41” and are custom tailored for each specific component.

Samples & Quality

We formulate a process for each product and provide our clients with finished samples at no charge. Collaboration with the customer is key. If something needs improvement, we’ll use the client feedback to adjust the process—not the standard. The result is a customized, consistent, and repeatable set of specifications for finishing your unique product.

Advanced technology

We continue to add state-of-the-art machinery, media and inspection equipment to adapt to the industry’s latest advances. Our methods have exceeded expectations by providing a better polishing quality and faster turnaround times than are typically possible in-house or as an outsourced operation.

Consistent Quality

Mass finishing is an extremely consistent surface polishing technology that matches well for the medical device industry. Dimensional accuracy, component production efficiency, and high performance surface polishes have become a medical engineering requirement. Mass finishing technology has played an essential role in delivering consistent quality surfaces to medical instruments, implants, and pharmaceuticals. ISO Finishing has developed proven finishing processing results that contribute to the life cycle of medical device manufacturing.

Exceptional finishes

Only the highest quality super alloys are able to provide the corrosion and wear resistance needed. The combination of complex geometries with these exotic alloys makes it especially difficult to maintain the smooth, crevice-free surfaces these parts require. Through our work with titanium, stainless, silicone and polymer alloys, we have developed and documented processes designed to ensure each finished part meets or exceeds strict medical requirements. Our experience producing high-quality surface polishing is a crucial step in the manufacturing process of medical instruments, orthopedic implants, knee and hip replacements, bone screws and plates, catheters, reattachment buttons and other surgical support items used in the operating environment; handles, trays, hooks, clamps, drill bits, and drill guides.

We All focus on Shiny Objects

When it comes to polishing medical components, perfection matters. Our certified processing is documented and designed to ensure each finished part exceeds the most demanding requirements.

Our Services

Centrifugal Barrel Finishing

Barrel tumblers work well for jobs requiring heavy burr removal. Centrifugal barrel finishing machines are also good for burnishing, rapid radiusing of edges, and heavy deburring. Removing excess material or polishing medical parts, remove burrs, improve surface appearance, polish and clean are all possible using centrifugal barrel finishing equipment.

Deburring

In the manufacturing world, deburring refers to various methods used to remove burrs, the residual rough edges or protrusions left behind after a part is produced. Burrs can affect the surface quality of manufactured parts produced where performance, safety, and appearance of a part is concerned.

Deflashing

Deflashing is the process of removing residual aluminum, titanium, or stainless material used in the manufacturing process. The deposition of small bits of residual material called “flashing” may appear in each part. The particles can be removed using a centrifugal barrel machine for a fast and cost-effective method of removing any residual particles.

Passivation

Our passivation of stainless steel system has been designed to offer our customers a one-stop solution tailored to meet the stringent ASTM a967 specification for the cleaning, testing, and passivation of stainless steel, titanium, and other metallic parts. Our relationships with local and national medical manufacturers and our expertise allow us to be a true value-added solution in passivation services to our customers finishing needs.

Polishing

The presence of burrs, parting lines from castings or other surface imperfections affects the adherence, continuity, and general durability of plated materials. Metal surfaces often require polishing and buffing prior to decorative plating. ISO Finishing understands the importance of pre-plate finishing. Polishing is not only used to enhance the appearance of a part, but it also helps prevent contamination of instruments, remove oxidation, create a reflective surface, optimizes performance and can prevent corrosion in pipes. When it comes to machined parts, smoother is better for reducing heat and friction.

Radiusing

Radiusing is a type of deburring that entails the removal or rounding of sharp part edges formed during the medical manufacturing process. Parts with sharp edges can be radiused to pre-defined specifications using centrifugal barrels, vibratory bowls and centrifugal disc machines.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

Ultrasonic cleaning is an environmentally friendly alternative to the solvent based cleaners previously used. Ultrasonic cleaning uses high frequency sounds waves, those beyond the range of normal human hearing (18 kHz), and an appropriate cleaning solvent to remove contaminants from parts. The ultrasound can be used with just water or be combined with surfactants to gently remove residual cutting oils and microscopic chips.
