Why packaging is so important

ISO Finishing takes great pride in providing superior finishing solutions for cast, molded, machined, fabricated and 3D printed components. With so much attention to detail in the isotropic finishing process, ensuring parts arrive at their destination undamaged is essential. While there are some things we can’t always plan for, proper care in how a part is packaged for shipment is key to preventing unwanted damage.

While it may seem obvious, correct container size is extremely important when shipping parts. A box that is too small may put unnecessary stress on parts, while a box that is too large may allow for movement or impingement. The size and geometry of the parts is used to determine the size of box or container needed for safe delivery.

In addition to container size, packaging keeps parts secure. Individual foam sleeves, trays and packaging materials are used to prevent damage inside by reducing movement, diminishing the risk of part impingement and keeping the integrity of the newly finished surface intact. Packaging also helps prevent damage caused by external forces such as stacking, dropping, and vibrating.

Packages can be exposed to moisture rain, sleet, and snow or from condensation buildup in trailers and shipping containers. Moisture can cause steel parts to become warped, moldy, or riddled with rust. To reduce the risk moisture damage can cause, metal parts may include the addition of rust preventative during processing or using Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) paper, films and wraps around parts or in packaging.

VCIs release compounds inside the package, which form a thin film on the surface of metal parts. This film is invisible and does not affect the physical properties of the metal. In fact, the parts can be used or have coatings applied right out of the package without further cleaning.

The team at ISO Finishing works hard to ensure processed parts are received in the same manner they leave our facility. While we can’t plan for every situation, we use the best packaging material and procedures available to ensure that your parts meet your expectations on every level. Let us show you what we can do.
